A History of Polygyny in Ireland
While Irish law in its current state does not recognise, a polygamous marriage that hasn’t always been the case. Brehon law specifically provided for polygyny and the complex rules governing inheritance, divorce, etc. So the claim that such relationships are alien to Ireland is disingenuous at best. In fact, it wasn’t until the advent of Christianity that strict monogamy was enforced.
The Current Situation
The current stalemate regarding the recognition of multiple simultaneous marriages highlights the poor response of the Irish government in meeting the social needs of its Muslim population and in particular the rights of Muslim women. The UK has made significant strides in this area but shortcomings still pose numerous difficulties for Muslims seeking matrimonial and Social Welfare benefits.
A Possible Solution
The UK has formally recognized a Shariah court system that works in tandem with UK law. This provision has removed many of the obstacles facing Muslims in multiple marriages, and the current situation in the Irish High Court provides an opportunity for Irish Muslims to broaden the discussion and lobby for the implementation and recognition of a Shariah court in Ireland. Under an Islamic State, both Christians and Jews are entitled to seek legal redress through their own court systems, and we see no reason why such a system would be difficult to implement here for the benefit of the Muslim population.

Polygamous marriages will now be recognized in the UK, provided they were married in a country that allows polygamy. Way to go UK.

Shariah law and UK law will soon be working together, if we can get the best of UK law with a mix of our Islamic law, slowly people will realised the beauty in it.
